Broadmead Welcomes New Resident, Susan O'Connor

By Elsa Collins

Susan O'Connor is accustomed to moving. Raised in West Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina, she graduated from Towson High School, received a bachelor's degree from Wake Forest University, and earned a master's degree in English from the Johns Hopkins University.

After marrying in 1963, Susan and her husband, William, spent several decades in a series of moves. The first three years of their marriage were spent in Hanau, Germany. Next, they moved to Towson, where William was an engineer with Black and Decker. Then followed a number of moves between Towson and North Carolina.

During this time, Susan taught English at the Army Education Center in Germany. In Fayetteville, she worked on a project to promote business between North Carolina and Japan. Back in Towson, she taught at Harford Community College, offering both traditional English courses and transitional courses for students who needed additional preparation for college courses.

Susan and William, who died in 2017, had two children: Elizabeth, who lives in Columbus, OH, and John, who lives in Darien, CT. There are five grandchildren.

Susan has been an active volunteer: She edited newsletters for the League of Women Voters, a garden club, and a homeowners association. Since retirement, her volunteer activities have been church related: treasurer, finance committee, church council, and some writing.

Susan plays bridge, loves to read, and enjoys time with her grandchildren. She plans to continue attending the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra concerts, Center Stage, and Everyman Theater when they resume.
