Traditionally at Broadmead, the Kwanzaa program has been presented on a day during the week after Christmas. This year, because of the pandemic, for the first time, the seven days of Kwanzaa were celebrated daily on Zoom, from December 26 to January 1. In another innovation, the staff was invited to partner with residents each day to discuss one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa.
Teams from each department took part. The residents on Darlington were on screen as the principle was explained. A story illustrating the principle was read or told, and responses from viewers were encouraged.
Jennifer Maraña, Director of Diversity and inclusion, organized the program with support from the Multicultural Committee, which sponsored it. Jennifer said that while shehad celebrated Kwanzaa in other places, thiswas the most meaningful because residentsand staff "learned so much about each other, creating a deeper connection and bond amongus all."
