One resident described the event as "brain aerobics" as many others enjoyed watching a presentation of the "call and response" African storytelling technique. With Mama Linda instructing, residents became part of the performance. She introduced songs she heard and learned as a child in Tennessee, inviting all to participate.
Brother Bernard encouraged the audience to help tell a story about visiting relatives in Alabama. Dr. David offered stirring drumming and work songs from Maryland's Eastern Shore.
All the presenters, as well as host Gwen, are members of Griots' Circle of Maryland and the National Association of Black Storytellers. The event was held on October 14.
