Broadmead Welcomes New Resident, Elizabeth Iacovone Legenhausen
Elizabeth "Betty" Legenhausen's life has been devoted to education. She began her professional career by teaching elementary grades in New York, Rhode Island, Maine, and Maryland.
After receiving a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, she became director of Grace United Methodist Preschool and then, beginning in 1987 until her retirement in 2012, was head of St. James Academy in Monkton. Most recently, she was the director of accreditation services for the Association of Independent Maryland and DC Schools. She also served as a trustee of Calvert Hall College High School and a consultant to St. John's Episcopal Day School.
Betty was born in Mahopac, NY, a dairy farming community 30 miles north of New York City. She received her B.A. from The Catholic University in D.C. She was married to Douglas R. Legenhausen, a master goldsmith and jewelry designer, for 46 years. The family's many moves followed his career, which eventually included Samuel Kirk & Sons, which merged in 1979 with the Stieff Co. to become Kirk-Stieff Co. in Baltimore.
Betty moved to Broadmead from Lutherville. Before that, she lived in the Baltimore neighborhood of Idlewylde. She has two sons: Kurt lives in Virginia, and Eric lives in Parkton. There are six grandchildren.
Betty is an enthusiastic traveler, having visited 87 countries and counting. Another passion is a lifelong pursuit of gourmet cooking, especially with celebrity chefs, including Julia Child. Betty's choice to move to Broadmead was partially influenced by her two companions, miniature poodles Jax and Rio.
