E very community
has its own special qualities that set it apart from the
others. Broadmead prides itself on being an open, friendly and relaxed
community. Such intangibles can best be realized with a visit to the
campus.
The sense of community among the residents and staff alike is
inescapable.
Among the more tangible qualities that define Broadmead
are its extensive
type A contract; national accreditation; diversity initiative; overall
natural environment; and the active residents association.
Broadmead's
Contract for Lifetime Healthcare
Broadmead is a CCRC offering its residents a Type A

Physical
Environment
Nestled in the rolling hills of Hunt Valley, Broadmead's
residents enjoy
the natural beauty of an environment rich in wildlife, nature trails,
and
the protected wetlands of the Western Run. The 94-acre campus provides
many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, while at the same time
offering
covered walkways that protect residents during inclement weather. The
garden style apartments were designed into 16
"neighborhoods," with units clustered around a common courtyard.
These smaller neighborhoods
allow residents to get to know one another quickly, yet the individual
apartments
still provide privacy to those who prefer the quiet of their own
backyard
patios and gardens. In addition, Broadmead also has a midrise which
houses twenty-seven apartments and is connected to the
Community
Center building.
Not only is Broadmead located in a country setting, it
is just a short
drive from the many cultural attractions of Baltimore City. Here one
can
enjoy the opera, theater, professional sporting events, symphony
orchestras, the Inner Harbor
and so much more.
Initiative
for Diversity and Inclusiveness
Broadmead is operated in the spirit of the Religious
Society of Friends,
under which all individuals are treated equitably with dignity and
appreciation
for individual differences. It is an inclusive retirement community
that
truly lives by its mission statement.
Broadmead's mission is to provide continuing
care services
to a diverse group of seniors in a warm, congenial community founded
and
operated in the spirit of the Religious Society of Friends.
A key component of the mission, as well as the Quaker values upon which
it is founded, is to appeal to and include a diverse population among
our
residents, trustees and staff. To this end, an ad-hoc committee was
formed
by the Board of Trustees in 1997 charged with:
- Educating itself on the multiplicity of issues
associated with the
building
of greater diversity within a continuing care retirement community
- Preparing the Community for the enhancement of
diversity through the
organization
of programs and activities.
- Developing an appropriate, positive action plan
proposal to take to the
Broadmead
Board on building greater diversity in the Community.
The committee developed a vision statement for Broadmead as it
relates
to the issue of diversity.
Broadmead, its Residents, Staff, and
Trustees, is a diverse
Community that values and celebrates differences among people and
perspectives
and will be a Community with increasing diversity of persons, cultures,
and backgrounds.
To achieve this vision, the committee set the following
goals,
along with action steps to reach the goals.
- Create an environment of understanding and respect
between and among
residents,
staff and trustees regarding the many aspects of diversity.
- Assure that Broadmead is open to all who qualify, and
that the general
public is aware of this policy.
- Integrate diversity competence into all aspects of
Broadmead community
life.
- Develop the resources necessary to complete the
overall Diversity Plan
- Support the Administration in efforts to make
proactive adjustments in
its Human Resources recruitment and staffing, and in interpersonal
communication
within and among departments.
- Monitor the progress of the accomplishment of the
above goals and the
performance
of the charge to the Committee.
A fund has been set up to assist those who may otherwise have
difficulty
paying the entrance fee. The Taylor Fund is available as needed to
allow
people with more limited means the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of
living in our continuing care retirement community.
Broadmead
is pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement
of equal housing opportunity throughout the Nation. We encourage and
support
an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no
barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex,
disability,
familial status, or national origin.

Residents
Association
The Broadmead Residents Association, of which all
residents are members,
is a dynamic and integral part of the community. The association
provides
programming for an extensive number of resident groups and activities.

committees
and provide input in several operational areas. Here are just a few
examples
of the many activities that residents plan and implement:

artists
